God is Fair

Kids are big on making sure that things are “fair.”  If mom is pouring some chocolate milk, and big or little brother gets .067 ounces more in his cup, it only takes about .067 seconds for the kid so let out a, “Hey, he got more. That’s not fair!”

The sad truth is that life isn’t always fair.  As one of our good friends is fond of reminding his kids, “There’s only two ‘fair’s’ in this life:  State and County”

What should I do if my parents are getting divorced?

We have both talked with teenagers who felt completely broken up inside as their parents were going through a divorce. For example, we’re thinking  a young woman who felt that the divorce was her fault, a young woman who knew it wasn’t her fault, but she really missed her dad, and a young man who was torn between living with his mother and father.

How can I overcome trials?

Several years ago I starting cutting my own hair. It works well—usually. But one afternoon when the razor first touched my hair, I felt something uncomfortable, and heard a loud buzzing noise. It only took a half second for me to realize that something was wrong—I had forgotten to put on the attachment, and had created a bald spot in my head!

Why do Some People Have More Trials than Others?

One of the most difficult aspects of mortality is that we experience trials. We know that the purpose of these trials is to help us become more like God. More refined. More pure. If God is patient, then I need to learn patience; and the primary way to learn patience is to not have something that is wanted. If God is forgiving (thank heavens!), then I need to learn how to be forgiving; that usually comes through being wrongfully hurt. And so on and so on. As Elder Orson F. Whitney so beautifully said:
